What is Geomatics

"The science of Geomatics is concerned with the measurement, representation, analysis, management, retrieval and display of spatial information describing both the Earth's physical features and the built environment"

Geomatics spans geography, science, mathematics and ICT.  It is an expanding industry in the UK, as well as Worldwide.  The geomatics degree at Newcastle runs two distinct programmes, one concerning GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and the other focusing on SMS (Surveying and Mapping Science).

GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a combination of hardware, software and data that allow us to map, analyse, visualise and understand the world around us. Being able to do this is becoming more and more important to a wide range of people: businesses, governments, major construction projects, environmental managers, researchers, and even financial organisations are all using GIS to improve their work by identifying trends, patterns and relationships between different locations.

SMS

Surveying and mapping uses state-of-the-art technology and mathematical-based analysis to study the built and natural environments. This allows us to go beyond simply observing the world around us, to collecting and analysing data about it.
